All about Kelantan and the World
Some fifty years ago, when I first set foot in Kota Bharu Kelantan, little did I realize that I would be living in a state filled with all the unique things I could ever imagine. From going to the wet market at pasar Siti Khadijah to having a rest on the white sandy beaches at Bachok, everything is so fascinatingly beautiful and captivating.
I stayed in Kelantan during my first visit for about 5 years. I enjoyed every minute of it. I was working then … with a government agency. Because of the nature of my work, I was with the locals almost everyday of my stay. It was a wonderful experience. I was accepted to their society in no time at all. Almost on the word go, I was surrounded by friends … and people who were willing to help.
My place of work then was about four kilometers from my residence. It was quite a distance, but I did not feel the time taken because every inch of the way I would meet people who would like to talk to me and would invite me to have a cup of coffee and ‘nasi berlauk’.
Today, during this second visit, physical changes have come to this ‘quaint little town’. It is no longer a ‘quaint little town’. But rather a thriving metropolis with all the trimmings of a modern city.
I am retired now. I came to this city more for a short visit … to meet some old friends … if there is any left. Only one or two are around … the others have gone … or at least they are no longer waiting to have ‘a cup of coffee and nasi berlauk’ at our favourite ‘warung’. The town has changed … and changed a lot. There are now sky scrapers and state-of-the-art buildings. The streets, at whatever time of the day, are always jammed. Kota Bharu is always crowded. But one thing though, the happy smiling faces are always there to greet me.
Well, that is Kota Bharu today. A town or rather a city that is marching on with the time … a city meant for the 21st century. I wouldn’t know for how long I will be staying this time around … probably for a few days … or perhaps for a few more years. Thank you Kota Bharu.
